I recently read an article by a man I highly respect, who opened with: ”To make money online people jump right in before they are properly prepared.” He then went on to describe how many trades in life require an apprenticeship or at least an extensive period of training to master the skills of the trade. It is an amazing phenomenon to me how often we do not perceive that dynamic as we approach internet marketing.
I know I am guilty, and I should know better. I am a carpenter who is getting too old and broken down to be lifting logs and beams, and walking around on walls. Ever since I heard of the internet, I have had a burning desire to find a way to make this work for me. Now after back surgery and a blown out rotator cup, it appeals all the more.
For a long time, I didn’t have a computer or internet because I couldn’t afford it. When I did get hooked up, I tried every bone headed thing out there. Well, not quite, even I’m not that stupid. I may not be the sharpest bit in the box, but I can tell when someone is duller than a two by four.
Every new venture taught me more about the whole internet marketing industry. Then work would pick back up again and I would be too busy. When work would slow down again, or I was out of work, I would roll up my sleeves and strike out with new determination to put together a system that would work. Avoiding previous pitfalls and scams, I truly thought that I had come into the inner circle of internet marketing guruism.
I bought in to more programs than I care to admit, spent thousands of dollars, only to be dumbfounded and overwhelmed by the immense amount of information I was completely unaware even existed. The more I learned, the less I knew, because not only did I not know it was coming, but I had no Idea what to do with it all. Domains, hosting, HTML, FTP, OPM, PPC, CPC, AdSense, ad words, keywords, TE, Articles, Classified Ads, Auto-responders, List Building, hub pages, Lead Sucking Squeeze Pages, Tweet your Twitter, Squid your Squidoo, Ping your Blog, OMG what HAVE I gotten myself into!!
Not to despair now. The pieces do begin to fall into place in time, if you don’t give up on learning. That really is the key. Many millionaire gurus (or maybe I should call them the journeymen.) That really does sound so much cooler doesn’t it? Anyway, these internet journeymen will tell you, that you always have to expand your learning and stay teachable. A man I knew some years ago once said: “If you know you are right, then at that point you become un-teachable.”
The world around us is constantly changing. Even in construction, the building codes have changed considerably in the past 10 years and even at that, it depends upon the county you live in and whether or not they adopt the most recent changes. What about computers and Windows? How many new versions of Windows have come out in the past 10 years? There has been Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, if you don’t remain flexible and teachable, and open to new concepts and developing dynamics, you are doomed, especially on the internet.
Just like in construction, I am constantly loading my tool bag (or truck) with every trade I can find function for. When I became a carpenter, I didn’t learn how to drive just one kind of a nail. There are hundreds of various fasteners out there, and I have learned how to use just about all of them. It’s an acquired skill. They don’t just issue it to you when you get your first hammer. The long list of old timers and hard knocks learners to whom I owe gratitude is considerably long.
A true journeyman knows where they came from. They know that the path to craftsmanship is a hard earned path with many trials and errors, failures and successes along the way. A true journeyman knows that there is value to your struggle and that you need to learn by your own experience to make you strong in your own pursuit of excellence.
There are, as I have found some safe harbors in the swells of offers to profit from internet business opportunities.
